Chapter 10

Lucy and I stared at each other. We didn’t have to say anything. She struggled to get up, but I pushed her back down on the bed. ‘I’ll look,’ I whispered to her.

Mum and Lucy’s dad were still busy talking about Lucy’s health as I looked under the bed and shuffled around Lucy’s room, making sure I wasn’t too obvious. The tripod was not anywhere to be found.

Lauren entered just then. ‘What’s all this?’ she demanded, startling us all. When she saw Mum in the corner with Lucy’s dad, she asked, ‘What is she doing here?’ She then saw Lucy laying down on the bed. ‘What’s wrong now?’ She crossed her arms and glared at Lucy, as if her stepdaughter was putting on another act of distress.

Seriously, I wondered where Uncle Garry found her. I was young, but even I knew she needed a few lessons in manners.

‘Hi, to you, too, Lauren.’ Mum sounded tired … and impatient. She and Lauren never really hit it off. She turned to Lucy’s dad. ‘Look, I think Sammy and I will go home. Lucy, will you be okay?’

Lucy did not look okay. She looked sick. She looked like she needed a good long rest...from Troy, from Lauren...from this house.

‘She’ll be fine,’ Lauren answered for everyone. ‘We can take care of her.’

She was clearly dismissing us. Mum gently pushed me out of Lucy’s room. I turned to look at Lucy one last time and tried to smile a comforting smile. We were down the stairs and out the front door in no time.

‘What was that?’ Mum muttered to herself when we were in the car. One minute we were in the house, caring for Lucy. The next minute we were out the door, booted on the backside, so it seemed. ‘I honestly don’t know where Garry picked her up from,’ Mum said, not necessarily to me. More like a general complaint.

I suppressed a giggle. Exactly my thoughts, I wanted to tell her. But I wasn’t sure what mood she was in, and this time I didn’t want to push her patience. We were late for dinner as it was. Rob and Theresa would be complaining by now.

The two-week holiday passed by in a flash. It was quite uneventful, really. Troy was not home those two weeks, so it was rather peaceful at Lucy’s. Mum let Lucy visit every other day. She must have sensed things were not quite right at the Callahan’s. I supposed she felt sorry for Lucy, too. But she wasn’t asking any questions—which was a relief for Lucy and myself. She also allowed me to visit Lucy on the weekends. The issue of the missing tripod was pushed to the back of my mind, but I knew that the thought of it was haunting Lucy even though we didn’t talk about it. Her mood was mostly glum during the two weeks. She was the worst on the Sunday Troy was due back. After lunch, Mum dropped me off in front of their house.
